In 2021, WESH 2 News anchor Nancy Alvarez underwent a routine mammogram that led to a breast cancer diagnosis. Alvarez shared her experience on the Inspiring Wholeness podcast, where she spoke with Dr. Anu Saigal, a breast surgeon at AdventHealth Winter Park.
“I didn’t feel a lump. I don’t have a family history. I just went and got a mammogram,” Alvarez said about her diagnosis.
Alvarez credited Dr. Saigal for the care she received during treatment and reflected on the support from her friend and fellow journalist Angela Jacobs, who had previously faced breast cancer but later died from the disease.
Dr. Saigal discussed how breast cancer has affected her personally: “My mom had a routine surgery, and, intraoperatively, they found an aggressive cancer. It shifted my entire world,” she said.
The podcast episode includes discussions about survival, loss, and the impact of breast cancer. It also covers statistics, screening recommendations, and details about how AdventHealth Cancer Institute offers multidisciplinary care by bringing oncology specialists together in one location to support patients and families.
AdventHealth Orlando is located in Orlando, Florida, was founded in 1908, and is led by President Terry Shaw. The hospital includes a pediatric ward and serves as a training hospital.
