Valencia College Theater will present the Florida premiere of “Yaga,” a play by Kat Sandler that reimagines the Slavic legend of Baba Yaga. The production opens on October 3 and runs for seven performances at the college’s Black Box Theater on East Campus in Orlando.
The plot follows a detective who arrives in a small town to investigate the disappearance of an heir to a yogurt company. The investigation brings together a local sheriff, a university professor, and various townspeople as they confront secrets, magic, and folklore rooted in Baba Yaga’s myth.
“Sandler has triumphantly reclaimed the evil-woman myth. Move over, ‘Wicked’ and ‘Maleficent,’ and welcome Yaga to the sisterhood,” said Martin Morrow of The (Toronto) Globe and Mail.
Performances are scheduled for October 3, 4, 6, 9, 10, and 11. There will also be a matinee on October 5 at 2 p.m. The venue is located at 701 N. Econlockhatchee Trail.
The play is recommended for ages 16 and up due to mature themes, strong language, and some violent content.
Ticket prices are $15 for general admission; $10 for Valencia College staff, alumni, and senior citizens; and $8 for current students. A $2 processing fee applies to credit card purchases. Tickets can be bought online at https://ticketpeak.co/valenciacollege/events. Advance purchase is advised.
“Yaga” was originally commissioned by Tarragon Theatre in September 2019 and is staged with arrangement from Emma Laird at GGA.
