More veterans in Tampa Bay will soon have increased access to stable housing and health resources through a partnership between University Area CDC and AdventHealth. The collaboration aims to expand the University Area CDC’s Rehab to Restore Hope program, which renovates properties in the University Area into affordable homes for veterans and their families.
On November 4, leaders from University Area CDC, AdventHealth, local government officials, and veteran residents toured existing Rehab to Restore Hope housing units. The event highlighted the impact of stable housing on both physical and emotional health.
“At the University Area CDC, we believe that a home is the first step toward stability and dignity,” said Arturo Puckerin, MPA, executive director & CEO of the University Area CDC. “Partnering with AdventHealth allows us to reach more veterans who deserve not only a roof over their heads, but also the support and resources that help them thrive.”
Glen Johnson, a veteran who experienced homelessness after retiring from the Marines, shared his experience with the program. “It’s going great so far,” Johnson said. “I hope it continues.” He credited University Area CDC with helping him find both housing and employment.
Erik Wangsness, president/CEO of AdventHealth Tampa, explained why AdventHealth chose to support this initiative: “When we learned about University Area CDC’s Rehab to Restore Hope program, we saw an organization that understands that stable housing is directly tied to better health outcomes. If people have a safe place to call home, they can focus on their well-being, connect with others, find purpose and start building toward their future. That’s the kind of work AdventHealth is excited to stand behind.”
The University Area CDC operates in Tampa’s 33612 and 33613 ZIP codes with programs spanning housing, workforce development, education, family support, and wellness initiatives. The partnership with AdventHealth reflects both organizations’ commitment to addressing social factors that influence community health.
AdventHealth Orlando is based in Orlando, Florida. Founded in 1908 and currently led by President Terry Shaw, it includes a pediatric ward and serves as a training hospital.
