UCF Libraries is organizing a service later this month to honor the memory of Richard Harrison, a long-serving faculty member. The event will take place at the John C. Hitt Library.
Richard Harrison joined UCF Libraries in April 2001 as an associate university librarian in the research and information services department. He was known for his knowledge and commitment to supporting colleagues and advancing the university’s mission.
During the 2003–04 academic year, Harrison worked as a senior faculty fellow in the Provost’s Office, collaborating with Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean of Undergraduate Studies John “Rick” Schell. In that position, he helped organize several undergraduate research initiatives, including planning UCF’s first Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence. He also served as a charter member of the UCF Undergraduate Research Council, contributing to the development of opportunities for students and faculty.
Harrison played a role in other campus groups such as the NSSE Academic Rigor Working Group and participated on the Faculty Senate’s ad hoc committee that developed UCF’s current Student Perception of Instruction form. His efforts focused on promoting academic quality and student achievement.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in English from The College of Wooster and completed a master’s degree in library science at Vanderbilt University. Colleagues recall his habit of donating books to honor others as an example of his generosity.
A Celebration of Life service for Richard Harrison is scheduled for September 17 at 4 p.m. in room 402 of the John C. Hitt Library. The event is open to all members of the community.
“His dedication to the university’s mission and his unwavering support for colleagues made him a cornerstone of our UCF community.”
“Harrison’s contributions, both personal and professional, leave behind a legacy that will continue to inspire. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.”
