The U.S. Census Bureau has released new data from the Business Trends and Outlook Survey (BTOS), which monitors business conditions and forecasts on an ongoing basis. The survey now includes information for businesses with multiple locations. The BTOS is designed to complement other economic surveys by collecting data on revenue, employees, hours worked, and inventories.
The BTOS covers all employer businesses in the United States except farms. It provides continuous and timely updates every two weeks on important economic indicators, offering detailed insights at both geographic and industry subsector levels. This regular reporting allows for analysis of how events such as natural disasters or economic downturns affect businesses and helps track recovery progress.
Approximately 1.2 million businesses participate in the BTOS, with data collected biweekly. These businesses are divided into six panels of about 200,000 each, with each panel asked to respond every 12 weeks over a year. According to the Census Bureau, it takes respondents about nine minutes to complete the survey.
The survey results will be published every two weeks and broken down by sector, state, and the 25 largest metropolitan areas in the country. These findings provide policymakers at all government levels with up-to-date information that can guide decisions. Businesses can also use this data to inform their own economic planning.
