Shalimar Beach Resort on Sanibel Island will reopen its doors on September 28, 2025, three years after Hurricane Ian caused significant destruction in the area. The resort has been completely rebuilt, marking the first new hotel construction on Sanibel Island in over four decades.
The updated property features 33 new accommodations, including private one- and two-bedroom villas with direct Gulf views and hotel studios offering partial water views. Amenities include a beachfront saltwater pool that is heated year-round, a rooftop terrace for sunrise and sunset views, fully equipped kitchens and screened lanais in every unit, as well as access to 360 feet of private beach. Additional facilities consist of a community BBQ and picnic area and on-site rentals for bikes, paddle boards, and cabanas.
The owners of Shalimar Beach Resort have longstanding ties to the local community. According to owner Sean Niesel, “Hurricane Ian tested us in every possible way, but it also clarified our purpose. Shalimar’s rebuild isn’t just about what we lost, but what we’ve gained: strength, perspective, and a renewed commitment to hospitality. As Sanibel Island visitors since 1990, we take great pride in being part of the island’s future for generations to come.”
Shalimar has operated as a family-owned business since its opening in 1959. The reopening is intended not only to revive hospitality services on the island but also contribute to ongoing recovery efforts following Hurricane Ian.
Reservations are currently available for fall 2025 stays through the resort’s website or by phone.
