The Young Workers Committee of IAM Union Local 2198, in partnership with the local’s Community Service Committee, recently organized a winter blanket drive to support individuals experiencing homelessness in Houston. The initiative resulted in the collection of 30 bags containing warm blankets, beanies, gloves, and emergency blankets to help those in need during the upcoming winter months. All items were donated by members of IAM Local 2198.

Key participants from the Young Workers Committee included Chairperson Quintarius Oliver and committee members Cora Walker and Eva Brooks. The Community Service Committee was represented by Chairperson Albert Harmason along with Maria Caban and Tamisha Hodges.

IAM Local 2198’s Young Workers Committee has been active in community service initiatives across Houston. In addition to the blanket drive, they recently hosted their inaugural Dora Cervantes Bowling Fundraiser, which brought together union members, families, and supporters. Proceeds from this event supported Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines, helping to provide services at no cost to recipients.

The committee also worked with Communities in Schools at Elsik High School by donating over 50 fully stocked backpacks to students ahead of the school year.

Richie Johnsen, General Vice President for IAM Union Air Transport Territory, commented on these efforts: “This is a powerful example of union values in action. Local 2198’s Young Workers are stepping up to lead with compassion, proving that our union’s commitment to service extends well beyond the job.”

Enrique Bojórquez, President of IAM Union Local 2198, recognized the contributions of young members: “Our Young Workers are setting the standard for what it means to be engaged, active union members. From fundraising to hands-on service, they continue to show up for both our community and our union.”

Dee Colbert, IAM Women’s and Young Workers Director, added: “IAM Young Workers are committed to service, leadership and building stronger communities. The work being done by Local 2198’s Young Workers Committee in Houston reflects the future of our union. IAM Young Workers are driven, compassionate and community-focused.”

Through these activities and ongoing outreach efforts, IAM Local 2198’s young members continue working toward strengthening their local community while upholding core union values.
