Duke Energy and Piedmont Natural Gas announced on Apr. 2 that they are urging residents to call 811 before starting any spring digging projects, as part of National Safe Digging Month. The companies emphasized that calling the national “Call Before You Dig” number is a crucial step to prevent damage to underground utility lines.
The reminder comes as both companies reported nearly 9,800 incidents in 2025 where underground electric and natural gas lines were damaged in their service areas. Utility officials say these damages can pose safety risks and cause service disruptions for communities.
Emily Henson, senior vice president and president of Duke Energy’s natural gas business, said, “Underground utility lines can be present even just a few inches below the surface. Many digging and excavation incidents are preventable. A quick call to 811 can help you avoid costly, potentially dangerous damages.”
The national system allows anyone planning an excavation project—whether contractors or homeowners—to make a free call at least three business days before work begins so local utilities can mark underground lines with stakes, flags or paint. In particular, more than 3,100 damages occurred at Piedmont’s natural gas facilities across the Carolinas, Tennessee, Ohio and Kentucky in the past year; Duke Energy also reported over 6,600 damages to its electric network across all territories.
“Duke Energy and Piedmont Natural Gas are committed to keeping our customers and communities safe,” Henson said. “Calling 811 to know what’s below before you start any digging project is fast and free, and it’s the best way to dig safely.”
