Cigna has announced a new reimbursement policy, “Evaluation & Management Coding and Accuracy (R49),” which will take effect for services provided on or after October 1, 2025. According to Cigna representatives, the policy is expected to impact very few physicians. The company acknowledged that its initial press release may have caused confusion, leading many physicians to believe they would be affected when, in fact, most practices will not be subject to the new policy. Cigna described this as a miscommunication.
The Florida Medical Association (FMA) has stated its intent to monitor the implementation of the policy to determine if further advocacy is needed. The organization expressed opposition to any inappropriate downcoding initiatives.
“If you are receiving downcoding adjustments from Cigna and believe they are inappropriate, please notify the FMA by emailing jfowler@flmedical.org. FMA members affected by other downcoding initiatives are also encouraged to contact us. This information will help our advocacy team assess the impact of Cigna’s initiative and evaluate the need for additional action. We will also provide direct assistance to affected members whenever possible,” the FMA said in a statement.
