The U.S. Census Bureau will begin an embargo for the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates on September 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. ET. The data will be released to the public on September 11.
The ACS offers detailed statistics about people and housing in the United States, including topics such as language spoken at home, education levels, commuting patterns, employment status, mortgage and rent information, income and poverty rates, and health insurance coverage. According to the Census Bureau, it is often the only source of local data for many of these subjects.
Embargo subscribers can access the new one-year statistics starting September 9 at 10 a.m. ET. The embargoed data covers all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, all congressional districts and metropolitan statistical areas, as well as other geographic regions with populations of at least 65,000.
Access under embargo lasts until Thursday, September 11 at 12:01 a.m. ET. During this period, wire services and distribution networks are not allowed to release news stories or data files before the official public release time. “Wire and distribution services are prohibited from distributing embargoed news stories and data files before the public release date and time,” according to the Census Bureau.
All related products—including those available through data.census.gov, its API service, summary files, and other tools—will be accessible by 10 a.m. ET on September 11 when they become public.
Those interested in registering for embargo access can do so through the Census Bureau’s website: https://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/embargoed_releases.
