As part of the NFL’s Crucial Catch initiative, which aims to promote early cancer detection and risk reduction, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and AdventHealth recognized Judge Mary Lou Cuellar-Stilo at Raymond James Stadium. Judge Cuellar-Stilo is a pancreatic cancer survivor and serves as a Hillsborough County Court Judge.

Nearly two years ago, Judge Cuellar-Stilo began experiencing digestive problems that led to her diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, a disease known for its severity and treatment challenges. She received care at AdventHealth after attending a support group led by Dr. Sharona Ross from AdventHealth Tampa. The group provided her with encouragement from others facing similar health battles.

Dr. Ross highlighted the urgency of surgical intervention in cases like Judge Cuellar-Stilo’s: “What’s unique about her story is that pancreatic cancer is thought to be such a deadly disease, but she had a dream to become a judge, and she was elected just before her diagnosis,” said Dr. Ross. “She was initially told her only option was chemotherapy, but in this case surgery was the only true chance for a cure. We have to operate when we can, because the chemotherapy options we have are limited and unpredictable.”

Dr. Ross performed a robotic Whipple procedure on Judge Cuellar-Stilo to remove the cancer successfully. She left the hospital within days of surgery and has since returned to work as a full-time county court judge.

Judge Cuellar-Stilo expressed gratitude for her recovery: “I love my job, and I’m looking forward to spending many more holidays with my kids,” she said. “I want to share my story so that others know there is hope, there are treatments, and there is support.”

The recognition took place through the AdventHealth Goal Getter program, which honors individuals who make an impact in their community or overcome significant obstacles. This program is supported by an ongoing partnership between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the AdventHealth West Florida Foundation.

AdventHealth continues its efforts in providing life-saving care, education, and promoting early detection in the fight against cancer across the region.

AdventHealth Orlando, located in Orlando, Florida, has served patients since 1908 and functions as both a pediatric ward provider and training hospital under current president Terry Shaw.

The event at Raymond James Stadium aimed to remind fans about the importance of early detection and specialized care in battling cancer.
