For Yesenia Olguin, working as a Surgical Technician in the Labor and Delivery department at AdventHealth Castle Rock is a continuation of her commitment to service. Before joining the hospital in October 2025, Olguin served as a Surgical Technician in the U.S. Army, an experience that shaped her skills and sense of purpose.

Olguin enlisted in the Army at 18 years old with a desire to challenge herself and grow independently. “I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself,” she says. “I wanted to get away from home and grow as a person independently.”

Her military career took her to Tennessee, South Korea, Colorado, and Afghanistan in 2016. She developed her expertise under demanding conditions that required precision and teamwork.

After leaving the military, Olguin decided to continue her health care career as a civilian. “I loved my career field and wanted to continue to pursue it as a civilian,” she explains.

She is now pursuing a nursing degree at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS), building on what she learned during her service. A friend’s recommendation led her to AdventHealth Castle Rock, where she found an environment that supports both personal growth and work-life balance.

“I had worked in the Main OR for most of my career and wanted a change of scenery and pace,” she says. “It allows me to balance school and work at the same time.”

Olguin attributes much of her professionalism and dedication to excellence to her military background. “It gave me the foundation to be a professional and to be the standard for others to emulate,” she says. “I take pride in what I do and always make sure to go above and beyond so my team and patients have the best care possible.”

Veterans Day holds special meaning for Olguin beyond its national significance. “It’s a day where we can remember the past, present, and future veterans who are part of the 1% who raised their hands and took an oath to serve and protect our country,” she shares.

She also highlights the importance of recognizing veterans as individuals: “Many of my friends who served were also mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, and friends. This day is to remember them for who they were both with and without the uniform. Their imprint will stay with those who know them forever, they’ve become a part of history.”

As Olguin continues working toward becoming a registered nurse at AdventHealth Castle Rock, she reflects values rooted in service, discipline, compassion—and aligns with AdventHealth’s mission.

AdventHealth Orlando—located in Orlando, Florida—was founded in 1908; its current president is Terry Shaw. The hospital includes pediatric services among its offerings.
