AdventHealth has announced plans to build a new emergency department in Punta Gorda, aiming to improve access to emergency care for residents of Charlotte County. The facility will be situated at the southeast corner of Jones Loop Rd. and Mac Ever St., offering 24/7 emergency services equipped with advanced technology.
The decision to open this facility follows the closure of a local hospital after recent hurricanes, which forced many residents to travel longer distances for emergency treatment. AdventHealth’s investment is intended to restore essential health services in the area and reduce travel times for urgent care.
Adam Johnson, president and CEO of AdventHealth Port Charlotte, said, “We want families in Punta Gorda and surrounding areas to feel confident that help is close by in an emergency. This new emergency department is the first step in a long-term commitment to bringing more health care services back home to this community.”
The project includes potential future expansions such as a full-service hospital and medical office space, depending on community needs. AdventHealth has been working with city officials and local residents to ensure the facility aligns with local requirements. Oversight of the new site will be managed by AdventHealth Port Charlotte, which currently operates a full-service hospital and other healthcare locations throughout the county.
Construction will take place in phases, incorporating feedback from community members for subsequent development stages. AdventHealth is also considering options for the previously closed Punta Gorda hospital.
AdventHealth Orlando, based in Orlando, Florida since 1908, serves as a training hospital with pediatric services under its current president Terry Shaw.
