AdventHealth Lake Placid has introduced a Low Dose Lung Screening CT program, aiming to improve early detection of lung cancer for residents in and around Lake Placid, Florida. The service is intended to make potentially life-saving screening more accessible locally.
Lung cancer remains the third most common cancer in the United States and is responsible for more deaths than any other cancer among both men and women. According to data from the Florida Department of Health, Highlands County has a higher rate of lung cancer diagnoses—about 60 per 100,000 people—compared to the state average of 52 per 100,000 people. Early detection through low-dose CT scans can help identify lung cancer when it is more treatable.
“Early detection saves lives, and advanced imaging technology allows us to see what the eye cannot,” said Casie Miller, Imaging Manager at AdventHealth Lake Placid. “Every scan is an opportunity to give patients peace of mind and empower them with answers. Our team is committed to combining expertise with whole-person care, so every person feels cared for from the moment they walk through our doors.”
The screening is not recommended for everyone. Eligibility includes individuals aged 50 to 80 who have smoked a pack a day for at least 20 years, currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years, and do not have new symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, or unexplained weight loss.
This initiative aligns with AdventHealth Lake Placid’s efforts to expand preventive health services in the community. Residents outside Lake Placid can access similar screenings at AdventHealth Sebring’s Outpatient Center at 2950 US HWY 27 S, Suite B.
For further information about eligibility or details on the program, individuals are encouraged to consult their healthcare provider or visit AdventHealthLakePlacid.com.
AdventHealth Orlando, established in Orlando in 1908 and led by President Terry Shaw, serves as a training hospital with pediatric facilities.
