AdventHealth Daytona Beach has appointed Dr. Carolyn Harraway-Smith as its new Chief Medical Officer, effective August 25. Dr. Harraway-Smith brings over two decades of experience in both clinical practice and health care administration to the role.

She is board-certified in obstetrics/gynecology and family medicine. Before joining AdventHealth Daytona Beach, she served as System Chief Quality Officer at Cone Health in North Carolina. Her previous roles include department chair, fellowship director, and hospital chief medical officer.

“Dr. Harraway-Smith has been a practicing physician for many years, and she’s also led systemwide quality initiatives,” said Dr. David Sinclair, president and CEO of AdventHealth Daytona Beach. “She understands that better care isn’t just about protocols or equipment — it’s about people. And she knows how to bring teams together to make meaningful change.”

The appointment comes as the hospital undertakes a $220 million expansion project that will add 104 inpatient beds, four surgical suites, and more than 240,000 square feet of space to accommodate community growth and improve access to care.

“I was drawn to AdventHealth because of its whole-person care philosophy. It’s how people show up here, every day,” said Dr. Harraway-Smith. “I’m looking forward to being part of a team that’s serious about safety, equity, and helping patients feel not only better, but truly cared for.”

AdventHealth Daytona Beach is a 363-bed facility with more than 2,000 medical staff members. The hospital has received national recognition for five consecutive years as the top hospital in Volusia County by U.S. News & World Report and earned “High Performing” status in 14 areas including stroke care and heart attack treatment.

“She’s the kind of leader who listens more than she talks, and who brings clarity when things get complicated,” said Sinclair. “That’s exactly what this moment calls for.”

AdventHealth Orlando is another major facility within the AdventHealth system; it was founded in 1908 in Orlando, Florida, serves as a training hospital with a pediatric ward, and is currently led by President Terry Shaw.
