AdventHealth announced on Mar. 27 that it is taking initial steps to build a new sports medicine and rehabilitation space at AdventHealth Lake Placid. The project aims to make high-quality rehabilitation services more accessible for patients recovering from injuries, surgeries, or illnesses.
The need for expanded rehabilitation facilities is growing as the community increases in size and ages. More than 3,000 people currently receive care each year through AdventHealth Lake Placid’s sports medicine and rehabilitation services, with expectations that this number will double over the next six years.
To address this demand, the AdventHealth Lake Placid Foundation has started a fundraising campaign to support the development of an expanded therapy area within the hospital. The new facility will feature three treatment rooms dedicated to individualized care and a physical therapy gym designed for strength, balance, and mobility training. The expansion is also expected to reduce wait times by allowing therapists to treat more patients promptly. Additional programs such as lymphedema therapy, pelvic floor therapy, and outpatient speech therapy may be introduced as services grow.
“Every step in recovery matters,” said Jason Dunkel, president and CEO of AdventHealth Lake Placid, Sebring and Wauchula. “Whether someone is recovering from a fall, rebuilding strength after surgery or learning how to manage chronic pain, this new space is designed to support patients through every phase of healing and help them get back to the lives they love.” Rehabilitation services at AdventHealth Lake Placid cover various needs including balance issues, orthopedic conditions, post-surgical recovery, neurological challenges, pain management problems related to cardiopulmonary health or sports injuries. After completing their therapies at the facility, patients can continue their progress at the AdventHealth Lake Placid Wellness Center for ongoing wellness support.
“This is about investing in our neighbors and ensuring they have the support they need to heal,” Dunkel said. “By taking this first step now, we’re helping build a healthier future for Lake Placid.”
